Timber harvest and wood biomass utilization are very important elements of comprehensive forest management. Wood biomass from our projects has the potential to result in a variety of useful wood and paper products as well as energy in the forms of heat, fuel and electricity. Using wood biomass, instead of wasting or burning it, has numerous social, economic, and environmental benefits. In 2008, we will increase our timber harvest and product utilization services. Watch for updates throughout this summer.

WRR's 300 HP Tigercat M726 grinder is equipped with a Fecon horizontal shaft grinding attachment. In a horizontal shaft head, materials to be shredded are drawn up inside the machine and forced against two sets of knives. The grinding action is contained inside the head, leading to a much safer work environment. During grinding, woody material is directed downward, using the ground as the anvil and not spraying debris laterally like vertical shaft heads. A horizontal shaft head is much safer from a fire standpoint also. Chips from these heads are less likely to ignite, but if there is an ignition, the operator can simply run over the fire with the head in the ground and snuff it out. The big brother below is our 425 HP Tigercat M760.

The West Range Reclamation grinders can leave logging slash, whole trees, and brush at any desirable specification from coarse chunky too a fine, landscaped finish. The finer the mulch size, the more time it takes to treat the material. Fine mulch is aesthetically pleasing, but the cost per acre is higher and if left in excess, fine mulch can have ecological consequenses. When too much mulch is allowed to accumulate, it can "insulate" the ground. The ground may not reach its normal temperature, the mulch will decompose at a slower rate, and it may take longer for native vegetation to regenerate. In many cases, the acceptable mulch depth determines how much timber will be harvested and removed from the site prior to grinding operations.
